Main trends in genetic transformation of Populus

Kutsokon N.K.

In this review the main advantages may be obtained with the poplar plantation production, their significance for industry and for solving the ecological problems are described. The main directions are analyzed for improving Populus phenotypes by the gene transferring related to tolerance to biotic and abiotic stress, herbicides, modification of wood quality (decreasing or modification the level of lignin), phytoremediation, fast-growth and morphological changes.
